Latin

Latin is now a dead Indo-European language. Latin originated in the vicinity of Rome around the 7th century BC. Over time, Latin spread throughout the territory of present-day Italy and even into the Roman provinces. In the territory of these provinces, Latin developed into the form of today’s Romance languages (i.e. French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Romanian, etc.). However, Latin also strongly influenced other languages, such as English.

Today, Latin is the language of the Church, and therefore all institutions of the Roman Catholic Church use it as a language of communication. It is also still the official language of the Vatican. Today, Latin is also widely used in professional terminology in areas such as medicine, biology, law, philosophy, theology, etc.
