Italian

Italian is a Romance language and evolved from spoken Latin. The first written texts in Italian date back to the early 9th century. However, the foundation of modern Italian can be considered to be the works of Dante Alighieri, who blended southern Italian dialects with his native Tuscan.

Italian is the official language of Italy, San Marino, and the Swiss cantons of Ticino and Grigioni. After Latin, it is also the second official language of the Vatican. Italian is also spoken in parts of Slovenia and Croatia.
