Finnish is the official language of Finland, where it is spoken by approximately 5 million speakers. Another million people speak Finnish in the world, especially in Sweden and the Russian part of Karelia. The first written Finnish texts appeared in the 16th century.
Until 1863, Swedish was the official language in Finland. Since 1883, Finnish has been recommended for use in offices and when issuing documents. Since 1893, Finnish has been fully equal to Swedish in Finland.
